Recent Developments
According to the Bank of Thailand (BOT), Thailand has been exploring CBDC since 2018 with Project Inthanon, a wholesale CBDC initiative using DLT for cash tokenization, decentralized transfers, and bond tokenization. Project Inthanon-LionRock (2020) was a cross-border collaboration with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. Project Bang Khun Phrom (end-2022 to Q3 2023) was a retail pilot limited to 10,000 participants with mobile app-based identity verification and 1:1 digital baht transfers. The BOT launched the Programmable Payment Sandbox in 2024 (expanded December 24, 2025), a Thai Baht-backed stablecoin sandbox for testing DLT, smart contracts, and condition-based payments. Thailand is a founding participant in Project mBridge since 2021, reaching MVP in mid-2024 alongside China, Hong Kong, and UAE. The government digital wallet scheme (launched August 1, 2024) is separate from BOT's CBDC initiatives. BOT has no immediate plans to issue retail CBDC officially but applies insights to programmable payments and tokenized assets.
