According to the Bank of Ghana, the e-Cedi is a retail token-based CBDC designed to enhance financial inclusion and digitize the economy. A pilot was conducted from January to April 2022 with 2,750 participants in Accra, Tarkwa, and Sefwi Asafo, testing both online and offline use cases per the Bank of Ghana's eCedi Report. The pilot demonstrated offline functionality using NFC technology to address connectivity limitations in rural areas. The Bank of Ghana published The eCedi Report in October 2024, documenting pilot findings. An e-Cedi Hackathon was held December 2023 with 88 applicants and 10 finalists showcasing solutions for agriculture, government payments, and business transactions. In October 2024, the e-Cedi won the Innovation in Digital Currency Design for Financial Inclusion award. Governor Ernest Addison affirmed commitment to launch before end of 2026, with Head of Fintech Kwame Oppong indicating a retail launch target of end 2025 contingent on enabling legislation. The Bank of Ghana reaffirmed commitment at the Cedi @ 60 International Currency Conference in November 2025.
