Recent Developments
Africa's first CBDC launched October 25, 2021 by President Muhammadu Buhari. eNaira is built on Hyperledger Fabric technology provided by Bitt Inc. Features four-tier KYC wallet system (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) with varying transaction limits. Despite being Africa's first CBDC, adoption has been low with only 0.37% of currency in circulation as of February 2025. CBN announced strategic pivot in 2024-2025 to focus on wholesale applications for government payments (MDAs).
