According to Norges Bank, the Digital Krone project concluded Phase 5 in March 2026 with a definitive decision that introducing a central bank digital currency is currently not warranted. Governor Ida Wolden Bache announced on 10 December 2025 that Norges Bank will be ready to introduce a CBDC if it becomes necessary to maintain payment system efficiency. The exploration work was part of Norges Bank's strategy for 2023-2025, with four reports published 24 March 2026: Norges Bank Papers 1/2026 (final Phase 5 report), 2/2026 (Digital Euro impact assessment), 3/2026 (experimental testing), and Staff Memo 1/2026 (tokenized deposits and wholesale CBDC). Both retail and wholesale CBDC were assessed during Phase 5, with DLT platforms tested. Norges Bank will continue to explore tokenisation and different forms of CBDC through experimental technology testing in collaboration with other payment system participants.
