Sweden e-Krona

According to Sveriges Riksbank, the e-Krona project is among the world's longest-running CBDC research programs, initiated in 2017. Phase 1 (2017-2021) focused on conceptual exploration and Phase 2 (2021-2023) on technical evaluation with industry collaboration. In March 2026, the Riksbank published a Payments Report recommending the appointment of an inquiry into legislative amendments to enable e-Krona introduction. The inquiry is proposed to be set up once the digital euro regulation is finalized and the ECB decides to issue a digital euro. The Riksbank has proposed that an e-krona could, by agreement with the ECB, use the euro digital platform for cost advantage and compatibility. Introduction of an e-krona requires a decision by the Riksdag (Parliament) as current Swedish law does not authorize Riksbank digital currency issuance. The strategic rationale includes maintaining Swedish krona competitiveness and avoiding dependence on the euro if the digital euro has major European impact.
