Recent Updates

According to the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), the e-hryvnia project is in the research phase as of March 2026, analyzing usage scenarios and global CBDC experience. The project officially launched in September 2021, with the 'e-hryvnia' trademark registered in 2022. A first pilot was conducted December 2018 - February 2019 for internal NBU employee use only. According to NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyy (August 2025), preparations for a pilot project are underway with technology partner selection nearing completion. However, NBU representatives stated in March 2026 that significant CBDC investments are 'not a priority' during the war, focusing instead on long-term technological solutions. Deputy Governor Oleksiy Shaban confirmed DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) is being considered for implementation. The planned architecture is two-tier with banks and payment service providers as intermediaries. Programmability features include smart contracts for targeted social transfers, programmed payouts, and innovative financial products. The e-hryvnia is defined in Ukrainian law as an electronic form of the currency of Ukraine issued by the NBU.
